Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear because of their requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They improve the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Additionally, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components in them with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase when it is upgraded to the highest upgrade level. However, it's important note that this will also increase its weight, which will cause it to be heavier than before.

There are several different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each has a different impact. Some upgrades give armor an additional number of health points while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item can receive, as shown below.

A few of the upgrades are also magical or a combination of magic and technology, which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges for use. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are continuously updated or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be gathered by exploring the area and looting minor loot chests. Titanium is more expensive but is readily available at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to higher level armor pieces. These upgrades can give significant boost to stats and are a worthwhile investment, particularly for one-handed weapons.

The player should be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to the maximum upgrade level will boost its defense. However, it will also decrease its agility and speed. For this reason, it is typically not recommended to upgrade most armor pieces beyond +9, because the increase in defense is typically not worth the additional weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can improve the accuracy of a rifle or the damage that shotgun shells do. Some weapons also have special upgrades that enhance their inherent characteristics. Frictionless materials (improves stability, minimizes the possibility of overheating), and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed for greater damage) are two examples.

Most weapon upgrades require three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade. These are obtained through either doing side quests, or taking out a certain number of bosses or monsters, or through the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price of a set number of Bars. The more bars you need to complete an upgrade, the higher the level. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets changed a little. Prior to Chapter 2: Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain number of Bars. You could continue doing this until you reached a max upgrade level of the equipment or weapon, following which upgrades would reset.

You can still do this, but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear that has low levels of upgrade, but high base scores and stat distributions. These items have a better chance of granting you the most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they use most frequently to make sure they are able to level up quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their teammates utilize to increase their power. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to increase its utility when accompanied by experts in biotics like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the sockets of armor and weapons, increasing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. They can be created using an process known as jewelry crafting, which is where you combine a gem and various chemicals at a table. The higher the level of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

All levels of jewels can be made at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to be able to get them. Like other upgrade components jewels are able to be swapped by a different identical jewel without destroying the original one. You are able to replace the jewel once within an item upgrades of equipment.

It is typical to use more gems to enhance the appearance of. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

In addition to the upgrades mentioned above, the player can also acquire glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be traded, but they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as aegis and traits, cannot be swapped out, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that bestow many small, but beneficial advantages to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and through completing road interactions. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then collect necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be placed in any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant bonuses and abilities that are active whenever the hero is not fighting. This allows the hero to become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also compensate for the absence of strong slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by the hero's best stats.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace in the near future, then any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is especially true if an item upgrader mod has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade, since it's generally more beneficial to upgrade one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one at the beginning of the game. Top and mid players however will pick a pink or green ward, depending on the matchup. These choices can affect a hero's ability to control the map.

Apart from the items listed above, players can find a number of other trinkets in the game in the form of trophies and awards. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, for instance completing a chapter's main quest or destroying a boss. You can check them out by selecting the achievement from the reward section of the hero's menu.
